About the workshop
Beautiful Venice
There is no city in the world more iconic and unique than Venice. It is truly a photographer’s paradise with stunning images to be captured at every twist and turn. Winter is a great time to visit, with long sunrises and sunsets and the possibility of mist and aqua alta, all helping to create wonderful, atmospheric images. Join us for a fabulous time photographing one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
The best of street & travel photography
We’re the Venice specialists! We run regular photography workshops in Venice and have an intimate knowledge of the city. Our workshops combine street / documentary shooting and travel photography, with expert guidance all the way.
We’ll spend much of our time together exploring the real, hidden Venice away from the tourists and into the area where the locals live, work and play.
Your tutors / guides
Brian and Chris are both professional photographers and skilled communicators and teachers. Each has much experience running photographic workshops and are both Fujifilm Ambassadors and can help you get the most from the Fujifilm system. But don’t worry if you shoot with another system, this workshop is designed to help you improve your photographic skills whichever kit you use. See our profiles for more details.
Small group, individual attention
You will be in a small group (maximum of 10 participants but split into groups of 5) so there will be ample opportunity for one-to-one discussion, tuition and mentoring; you’ll never be in a group larger than 5 participants. Your workshop will be immersive, inspiring and great fun. The experience will challenge you, stretch you and will elevate your photography.
The weather
The winter weather can be fabulous from low, raking winter sunshine, to mist, fog and possibly even the acqua alta (high water), perfect for evocative, atmospheric imagery. Whatever the weather there are always photographic opportunities in Venice.

What will you learn?
We will work on techniques for exposure, focusing and composition; learn how to spot an opportunity for a unique picture; discover how to work with great light and become a master of it; build your confidence as a street photographer; perfect your digital workflow.
We will also cover use of filters, long exposure, blue hour, sunrise and sunset photography as well as creative techniques such as Intentional Camera Movement and Multiple Exposure. Most of all, you will discover new ways of telling the story of your travels through great images. We will be doing lots of structured shooting and you will receive coaching, mentoring and constant feedback from your course leaders, Brian Lloyd Duckett and Chris Upton.
Experience / difficulty level
Level of physical difficulty: 3 out of 5 (moderate). Whilst elevation changes are limited to steps and bridges and we will be using the water bus to move around, there is a lot of walking on this tour. We will be out most days for sunrise, come back to the hotel for breakfast to recharge and then out again for the rest of the day in order to make the most of the light.
